Example Letter #1
Below is an example letter that you may start with when sending to the President.
Dear President Bush,
I am writing to you on behalf of Jenny Diaz and her family. Jenny is wonderful young woman who just turned 12 last month, on October 14th. Four days before her birthday her mom, Irma Diaz, and her older brother and sister, Luis and Monica Diaz, were deported to Guatemala. Her father is still here because he has an appeal pending before the immigration authorities.
Jenny was born in Portland in 1994. She has lived in Beaverton, a Portland suburb, for all of her life. She is in the 7th grade at Five Oaks Elementary School. I have known her and her family since _______. I am [DESCRIBE SELF, WHAT YOU DO, HOW YOU KNOW DIAZ FAMILY. For example: I am a 20-year veteran of the United States Navy. After leaving the Service, I worked for the Post office for 15 years. I am now retired and live with my wife in the same mobile home park where the Diaz family has lived the last 15 years. I have known the Diaz’ ever since I moved into this community. You could not meet a nicer family. They are very hard- working, friendly, and helpful, and we have really appreciated having them as neighbors. Etc.]
This is a country of immigrants. We are also a country that supposedly puts families first. It isn’t right for the government to take a 12-year old girl’s mom away from her. It isn’t right for the law to split up families like this, especially when no one in the family has committed a crime and the family has paid its taxes. It isn’t right to force a U.S. citizen teenager to choose between staying in America and losing her family, or leaving her home and country to live in a dangerous, dirty slum in a country she doesn’t know. Treating a child this way is evil, immoral, and unAmerican.
Mr. President, for the last six years you have said again and again that you wanted to reform the immigration system in this country. You have had a lot of opposition, so not much has happened. Please do something to help Jenny Diaz and her family, and families like her. No U.S. citizen child should have her family taken away from her the way Jenny has. That simply isn’t right.
Thank you taking the time to read this. I hope to hear back from you. If I don’t, you’ll hear from me again soon.
Sincerely yours,
SUPPORTER
